#97. Pixies - Andro Queen (3:23)
What’s this? New music from Pixies? Well, yes, sort of. Although Kim Deal has been traded in for Zwan/A Perfect Circle’s Paz Lenchantin, Frank Black is back to writing music. Indie Cindy is the band’s first album in 23 (yes, 23!) years, and while “Bagboy” is the song most reminiscent of Pixies classic sound, all in your face, with abrasive shouts and Kim’s (Oops, I mean Paz’s) sly backup vocals, the true jewel of the album is found on the back half in “Andro Queen”. It’s a more subdued track that speaks to the versatility of Frank as a songwriter, and it’s where he tells the tale of falling in love with a being from that nearby cluster of stars, the Andromeda Galaxy.
Best Moment: Every time Frank sings the beginning half of the chorus with that minor chord twinge before it gets resolved, first showing up at 0:08.
The Album [Indie Cindy]: 6/10
