#24. Tennis - My Better Self (3:44)

Although the first Tennis album Cape Dory seemed little more than a poor man’s version of Best Coast’s Crazy For You, it looks like husband/wife duo Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley have added some hooks to their wimpy lo-fi indie sound the second time around. The best cut on Young And Old starts out innocently enough, and until the first chorus you might feel “My Better Self” floating in one ear and out the other. But then that key change hits, Alaina starts musing about the meanings of words and shit is on. Who knew one of the blandest acts of 2011 would rally in 2012 and drop a song that could stand up next to some of the better Camera Obscura or Cults tracks. Sometimes it’s nice to be surprised.

Best Moment: Each time the chorus drops its hook into us at 1:10 and 2:25.
